LIPOEDEMA
What is Lipoedema
Lipoedema is a chronic condition characterized by abnormal fat accumulation, primarily affecting the legs, thighs, buttocks, and sometimes the arms, while the hands and feet remain unaffected. It mainly occurs in women and is often hormone-related, developing or worsening during puberty, pregnancy, or menopause.
Key Features of Lipoedema
Disproportionate fat distribution – The lower body appears much larger compared to the upper body, despite overall weight loss efforts.
Pain and tenderness – Affected areas can feel painful, bruising easily with even minor pressure.
Soft, nodular fat texture – The skin may feel soft, lumpy, or "doughy."
Bilateral and symmetrical – Both legs (or arms) are affected equally, unlike lymphoedema, which can be one-sided.
No involvement of feet or hands – Unlike lymphoedema, swelling stops at the ankles or wrists, often creating a cuff-like appearance.
Resistance to diet and exercise – Lipoedema fat does not respond well to traditional weight loss methods.
Treatment & Management
While there is no cure, management strategies include:
Compression therapy to reduce discomfort and swelling.
Lymphatic drainage massage to improve circulation.
Low-impact exercise (e.g., swimming, walking) to maintain mobility.
Anti-inflammatory diet to manage symptoms.
Surgical options like liposuction in severe cases.
Why Early Diagnosis Matters
Lipoedema is often misdiagnosed as obesity or lymphoedema, leading to frustration for patients. Early diagnosis and proper management can help prevent progression, reduce pain, and improve quality of life.
